Project: Beetlehawk

This one needs allot of help. This one is going to look fun, ferocious, and fast. It has already got some pretty rare and unusual aftermarket pieces that came with it. It has phinolic and steel gears in the tranny, a lexan tranny gear cover, ( that I am going to have repopped), new NOS suspension arms, full ball bearing tranny case, and a bad ass NOS old school Le Mans 480 motor. Keep checking back as I plan on doing a little bit at a time, until I get her done.

This is the start of the build. This one is going to be filled with some very unique parts and accessories. I know I've pictured the yellow radio tub twice now, but I am not going to use it on this build. This is basically going to be a Tomahawk style chassis, modified to work with the Beetle body. I have done the usual cleaning and prepping of all the parts, and have started getting the chassis parts detailed. The rails had very deep scratches in spots, as well as the rest of the chassis parts. In fact some most were unusable and needed replaced with NOS parts from my vault.
These are cool! Aftermarket gears! They appear to be phinolic and steel. Pretty cool non the less. Check out the clear Lexan gear cover. I think that is very cool! As you will see below the tranny is NOS with new gears and full bearings installed. The rear arms are new as well with bearing installed as well. The front arms had been drilled and bushed so they were replaced with NOS ones.
I gave the chassis a brushed finish with a Scotch Bright rivet cleaning wheel. This worked very well and gave a very nice even surface. It is very hard to see in the pics below but the surface turned out pretty nice on these old used parts and the new ones. They can still be buffed up for a shinier appearance if I decide to. That would result in an almost stainless steel look. After getting the parts brushed, I began putting the chassis together.
This build is a unique one to say the least. I went ahead and installed the new aluminum stand offs I had made for Project: Tight End. I will have to make an upper chassis plate for her, and figure out how to get the battery to set within the frame rails instead of across them. I need to get a 17 tooth pinion gear for this gem.

I rethought this project while working on the Gun Slinger. I have all these NOS parts and decided I was going to use them. So I took the chassis back apart. I pulled out all new chassis parts and began reassembling with new parts. I brushed the new aluminum for the chassis so it all matched. and I put new front and rear suspension arms back on.
A new Le Mans 480 motor was installed and a NOS Tomahawk resistor heat sink was put atop the tranny. I then dug out an NOS set of wheels. My last front 5 holes, and an NOS set of solid rears. I was going to do this to the Star Spangled Scorpion but decided against it. I painted the center black and rim edge red on the rear wheels. I am debating on painting the rim edge on the fronts. I then added an NOS set of tires. I am going to black the studs on the front rim. I have NOS shocks for this build also.
I went to assemble the NOS shocks and when I started putting the shock collars on They began splitting and cracking. Just because there NOS doesn't mean there new. Well I had these nice new red aluminum shocks and no way to keep the springs on them. So I decided to put the springs in them instead. I had springs that came out of set of aftermarket shocks. They fit inside these shock body's perfectly. They worked great Perfect stance!

I decided on NOS chassis parts so I couldn't settle for an aftermarket body on this project. I pulled an NOS body from the parts bin and began trimming it. I guess I'll use the aftermarket beetle body on another project. Maybe I'll actually build a runner one of these days.
