Adding Quick Details to Painted Bodies

You can add detail to a freshly painted body in just a few minutes with just one little simple tool! It's called a Sharpie marker! You know! A Sharpie! Those black  felt tipped permanent ink markers you can buy from any drug store or department store that sells stationary! Sharpie makes three different size Sharpie's.I find it easiest to use all three when I detail with them. The first one I'll use is the Ultra Fine Tip Sharpie. I use this marker to outline the area to be detailed as well as sometimes mark a door opening or hood line gap in a body. For this HPI Bronco body I will use it to outline the fender flares, and roll bar.

Be sure to color back from the out line with this marker as well. This will help you color the remaining area with the fatter tipped markers.  Once I have outlined the area, I move onto a Chisel Tip Sharpie Marker. I use this to fill in the majority of the area I am detailing. I stay back away from the outlined area though! I do not try to get up to the detail line with the Chile Tip. If you do it you are only asking for trouble. So if you try it let it be known it's an easy way to mess up a body! Remember this stuff is permanent, and does stain some polycarbonate.

Once you have the majority of the area being detailed colored in with the Chile Tip Sharpie, pic up the Fine Point Sharpie, ( This is a felt tipped tapered point Sharpie ) and begin filling in the area between the Ultra Fine Tip section and the Chile Tip section. I also use this marker a lot to fill in areas the Chile Tip can not make it into. Check out the detail so far in the next couple pics.

To the left you will see another one of my secret weapons for quick details on R/C bodies. The Silver Sharpie! These can be tough to find sometimes. These are best found at an office supply store. These are super cool for certain areas of a body! Below are a couple examples I it for on the Bronco body.

The Silver Sharpie can be used for many different detailing highlights on a R/C body. Use your imagination and give this quick tip a try on your next paint job! It is a huge time saver, and beats trying to mask off detail areas to paint them. Once you have detailed the body with your Sharpie markers, add the decals. You will be pleased with the results and astonished at how little time it took to do! Below are pics of the finished results for the HPI Bronco body.
